Dix Tourny, pt 2

Here are some more pics from the Dix tourny.

Game 1.  Mandan Mavericks vs Dickinson Cougars.  Jaxon was out this tourny, so Jonathan played center.

This was the final score.  Jonathan had 10 rebound, 8 points, and 3 fouls.  The 3 fouls were all in the first half, so he sat out most of the 3rd quarter.  He normally only gets 1 or 2 fouls a game, but with Jaxon out, he was our only 'big' player to guard the lane.

Game 2:  Mandan Mavericks vs New Town Eagles.
This. Team. Was. Big.  Very big.  It is noted that 2 players on this 5th grade team also played on the 6th grade team "MHA Thunder", which is a New Town team as well.  Birth certificates are not required in traveling basketball to verify age, but there was talk among the boys if these 2 were 6th graders.  Or....they could be 5th graders that 'played up' on a 6th grade team.
Anyhoo.....
Jonathan did not win the tip off.  His coach knew he wouldn't win the tip off, so placed Jace way behind the Eagles' center.  The ball was tipped right to Jace, who put in an easy lay up.
This pic was referenced yesterday.  It still makes me laugh.

Jonathan's hand is sticking up to defend the shot.

Jonathan had 6 points and 7 rebounds this game.  He pretty much played the entire game.  Coach took him out with just over 2 minutes to go.

Game 3:  Mavs vs Dickinson Press

I would also like to see this boy's birth certificate.  Jonathan played excellent defense against him.  This frustrated #16, who got kind of butt aggressive-Jonathan held his ground.

This just cracks me up.  I wish I had video of #16 sticking his butt back into Jonathan, and J just pushing back against him
J still got some rebounds on him

This was a more physical game, but their largest margin of victory.  J had 6 pts and 4 rebounds

Championship Game:  Mavs vs Dickinson Heat.
The Heat did not have any giants on their team.  2 of their boys were a little taller than Jonathan.  They had a few really short players, which always scare me more than the giant players, since I know how our short players play.
J sunk both of these free throws.  He finished the game with 6 points.  He spent a lot of time on the bench with foul trouble...ended the game with 4.  The general consensus among the Mavericks' coaching crew and parents is that several of the called fouls were not fouls.
I only took 2 pictures this game, as it was intense and competitive.  The Heat had a 1 point lead early in the game, and most of the game the Mavs just had a 4-7 point lead.  Thankfully the 4th quarter went well for us, and they won by 11.

Well done, Mavs!

Megan and Surf

Megan slept well with Surf at her side last night.  surf was a bday gift from Aunt Amy.

Dickinson Tournament

We are in Dickinson for the DHS/THS tournament.  The Maverick's played 2 games today.  Our big player Jaxon is out for a few tournaments due to surgery, so Jonathan had to play his part.  Our 2nd game was against New Town.  J guarded #20.  My prayer before this game was for Jonathan's safety.

The Mavs won their first game 53-13, and beat New Town 58-22.  Two more games tomorrow.

I'll post more pics once we are home.  The hotel internet is horribly slow.

And....Megan and Eric made it through both games without complaining of being bored.  This is a first.

Fun with Borax, baking soda, corn starch, elmer's glue, Ivory soap, and vinegar

There was no school today due to the cold weather.  This made me happy, not so much in regards to my children's safety, but more in regards as a day off of work.
How to occupy the kids on such a day in a way that does not involve screen time?  Well, with a few common household products, we were able to have all kinds of fun, and learn a little science as well.

First, Megan and I made slime.  This was basically just a mixture of borax, corn starch, water, and Elmer's glue.  She loved it.  I did not take pictures.

Next, we called in the boys to see what happens when you put a bar of Ivory soap into the microwave.

This is what happens.  It grows.  A lot.  When you play with it, it is a very light and fluffy texture, similar to foam.  At this point of our science fun, Megan decided she wanted to take a bath with the new soap, so we proceeded without her.
Next up was exploding goop, which neither exploded nor was real goopy.  You mix equal parts of baking soda and cornstarch, then spray it with vinegar.  The vinegar and baking soda react to make bubbly stuff (explosion), and the vinegar and cornstarch create a goop

It was goopy, but the explosion was more of a fizzle.
Next up was oobleck.  Eric requested we make this.  We used the recipe below, but found a concoction of 2 parts cornstarch to 1 part water worked better.

I did not get any after pics of the oobleck, as my kitchen and hands were becoming quite the disaster.  We also tried to make a bouncy ball, mixing cornstarch, borax, water, and glue together.

Seven

7 years old today!  Megan was just a wee bit excited last night.

The boys blew up a bunch of balloons.  They hid them in their room (to protect then from Kacy), and set their alarm for 6 am to move them to the hallway and bathroom before Megan would wake up.  They woke her up at 7-would have done it sooner, but I wouldn't let them! (an overtired Megan is not pretty nor pleasant)
The boys also planned a treasure hunt for her gifts.  They hid clues and hints throughout the house

The boys had as much fun with the Spriograph set as Megan did!
 Ice cream cake with supper!
