Wild and Crazy

When people think about Don and Lisa, the first thing that comes to mind is spontaneous, fun loving, wild and crazy people who fly by the seat of their pants.
Early along our drive from Thermopolis, WY to Wall, SD, Don just threw out the idea that instead of driving home tomorrow, we see if we can stay at our hotel in Wall for an extra night, and just have a day to be lazy. Hmmmm, sounded good to me.
We are happy. They we were able to reserve the same room for Friday night. Tomorrow, we will be lazy in Wall, SD. The hotel has an indoor and outdoor pool and a hot tub, all which are in good working condition. There are several ice cream shops, I'm sure there are a few coffee shops, and there are many souvenier shops.
Aside from the craziness of our spontaneous, unplanned decision to stay an extra night, today was relatively uneventful. We had another scenic drive on our way from Thermopolis to Buffalo, WY. We found a nice picnic area for lunch. The kids enjoyed running around a bit. Shortly after our lunch, we came across some ranchers on a cattle drive, and had to wait for many, many, many cows to cross the road in front of us. We rolled down the windows. The mooing was a hoot for the kids to hear (and for us!). We made it to Mt Rushmore. The kids again were thrilled. We stayed for less than 15 minutes. I only took 5 pictures.
We are tuckered out! Jonathan is reading his Ranger's Apprentice book, Eric is reading his Incredible Hulk comic book to Megan. All 3 of our kids were happy today.

more pics

Here's the Shutterfly link to the rest of my pics from the last 2 days....The ones of the Wind Canyon drive were taken through the windshield, and I did not take the time to edit the bug blemishes from view. I also didnt' take time to delete the mostly duplicates of the scenic sights (ie.....there may be 20 pictures each of Old Faithful, pretty streams, hot springs areas, etc....)

My body still wants to wake up at 4:30-5 am CT, which is even earlier in MT.....time to head to lobby for my free breakfast and some coffee and wait for the kids to wake up.

Wildlife

Traffic backed up 40 cars or so on the narrow roads of Yellowstone National Park can only mean on thing....

Can you see it?

It was a "small" bear. The mama was spotted a bit up the road at the next traffic jam, which wasn't as bad since not as many people seemed to want to get out of their cars to make a picture of the larger sized creature with larger claws on its paws.
The boys and I did get out of the van to walk towards the crowd of people to see what the fuss was all about. We were probably 25-30 feet from the bear. The boys thought this was so cool. I did not, since I remembered where there is a baby bear, there is a mama bear.

Vacation, Day 4

We have seen many sights. We have taken many pictures. We have driven many miles. We are thankful for one of our children, who is always in a good mood, smiles for every picture, helps when asked, and rarely complains. We are thankful for patience in dealing with the other 2 children who are known to scowl, whine, and stomp, especially prior to the noon hour.

Some highlights of our trip so far:
Eric being obsessed with all the Chinese tourists. They are everywhere. They travel on tour buses in large groups. Eric greets them with a smile and "Ni Hoa", which is Chinese for "hello" (he knows this from conversations with the staff of our favorite Chinese restaurant. Most ignore him. For all I know they aren't even Chinese. One said "hi" back. WOW! They speak English! He couldn't believe it!
Megan losing the ability to walk more than 10' before exhaustion sets in, which is only cured by riding her horse (meaning sitting on Don's shoulders). It is very tragic if she cannot ride her horse.
Jonathan has been granted digital camera privelages, using my old Kodak Easy Share. I think he has taken more pictures than I have. He is even getting better at including people's heads in the picture.

Today we saw Old Faithful. We were so lucky to find a parking spot right away, only have to wait 20 minutes to see it erupt, and find some good deals at the gift shop. By then, we agreed that we were Yellowstoned out, and got the heck out of Dodge. We did a quick zip through the Northeast portion of Grand Teton Natl Park, and are now in Thermopolis, WY. The drive here through the Wind Canyon was stunning-just as beautiful as anything we saw in Yellowstone. The pictures I took in the Grand Tetons were from the van moving at a pace of 45 mph or so.

Our hotel room here is so cool. It has 2 queen beds and bunk beds. The pool.....not so cool. It is freezing cold and has dead bugs floating in it....it's an indoor pool.

We explored Hot Springs State Park instead of swimming. We played on playgrounds # 14 and 15 for the summer. We have now played on playgrounds in 4 different states this summer.

Tomorrow we are off to Mt Rushmore. The boys are very excited, especially Eric. Maybe we will have 2 happy boys????

Wish you were here

Just finished Day 2 of the Yellowstone trip. The boys and Don got souvenier T-shirts in Red Lodge, which they immediately changed into. We had fun at the Montana Candy Emporium. We went through the Beartooth Highway and the North End of Yellowstone. Towards late afternoon, we were admiring the sights from the car...we were tired and eager to get to our hotel.
We will be back for more tomorrow.

8

Eight years ago, we had these cute little babies. We were rookie parents. They were our guinea pig children. We went through over400 diapers a month. We did not sleep. The laundry was constant. We survived ear infections, PE tube placements, hernia repair, hand-foot and mouth, rota-virus, tonsillectomies.......The double strollers logged hundreds of miles. We filled every square foot of our van on road trips.

The result so far is two amazing young boys. Best buddies. They each have a strong sense of self, and are as different as brothers can be. They look out for each other. We are very proud of them, and look forward to all the adventures the next 8 years will bring.

Happy Birthday, Jonathan and Eric!

Party at Jason's

We crashed Uncle Jason's condo our last night of our Park Rapids vacation. We love un-alphabetizing his cupboards. We popped some popcorn and watched Monsters Inc. Sunday am we went to visit my Grandma's grave, played at the park near Jason's condo, and had lunch at Pita Pit.

Nelson Lake

My cousin Shelly and her husband Todd had the Cook family to their lake home to celebrate their 25th Anniversary. I now want a lake home.
Macy's Dad has a cabin on a neighboring lake that is connected to Nelson Lake, so he came by and picked us up to go tubing. You should have heard their squeals on that! Eric even said it was better than video games. As expected, Jonathan was giving the "go faster" sign for the majority of his tubing. Megan went on a pontoon ride with Gma and Gpa. It was so exciting that she napped for most of it.

Beach Day

We went to Detroit Lakes for our annual Beach Day w/ Grandma and Grandpa, only Grandpa stayed home this year. There was a fun playground there that the kids all enjoyed. Mom's favorite part was having pizza at Zorbaz. I think I gained 5 pounds that day.

Nothing runs like a Deere

The best toy ever.....
The boys had a blast cruising around Grandma and Grandpa's backyard on the John Deere lawn mower. Grandpa had to disengage all safety features for them to do it since they are such skinny little farmers. One boy had to be told many times to slow down. Macy got in on the fun as well. She set up some soccer cones to make a driving course. Thankfully the boys were better drivers in real life than what they are in "Burnout"
